Kanam Local Government Area

Kanam Local Government Area (LGA) is one of the 17 LGAs in Plateau State, Nigeria. It’s located in the northeastern part of the state and has Dengi as its headquarters. The LGA covers an area of 2,600 square kilometers and had a population of 165,898 in the 2006 census.

Kanam Local Government Area Loction and Geography

Kanam LGA is situated in the northeastern part of Plateau State. It borders Langtang North and Langtang South to the east, Shendam to the south, Mikang to the west, and Pankshin to the north.
The LGA is characterized by a dry and rainy season, with an average temperature of 28°C and humidity around 62%.

People and Culture

The predominant ethnic groups in Kanam are the Bogghom and Jhar people. Other ethnic groups include Hausa, Fulani, Ngas, Taroh, and Berom. The Boghom and Jhar languages are spoken in the LGA, along with Hausa as a lingua franca. The Lele-Wayo cultural dance is a notable tradition in Kanam, often performed as a masquerade.

Economy

Agriculture is the main economic activity in Kanam, with crops like Cotton, maize, sorghum, millet, yam, and groundnuts being cultivated. Animal husbandry is well practice in Kanam Local Government Area. Three major Local markets include Kukawa (Friday), Jarmai (Wednesday), and Dengi (Friday) markets.

Traditional Institution

Kanam Local Government Area has been under a monarchical system of governance, with the Emirate Council playing a pivotal role since its inception. Currently, His Royal Highness Dr. Muhammad Mu’azu Muhammad II, the Emir of Kanam, serves as the traditional custodian, embracing both Muslims and Christians alike, regardless of their religious differences. He is renowned for his just and neutral leadership, fostering harmony among his diverse subjects.

Educational Institution

Presently there are two government “O” level institutions namely Government College Dengi and Government Secondary School Dengi. These are the presence of State government interms of educational infrastructures. There are tenths of the “O” level institutions operating by the private individuals.

Kanam Local Government Area is home to several educational institutions. The state government operates two prominent “O” level institutions: Government College Dengi and Government Secondary School Dengi. Additionally, there are numerous private “O” level institutions, with tens of schools providing educational services to the community.
